Key points

• Idea of order, guidance, structure (character exposition of Javert); piece is very subtly structured (3 sections differentiated by theme/main idea, has a slight rhyme scheme) representing underlying order + structure in society 
• RELIGIOUS IDEAS
• Contrast of Darkness and Light (furthers religious allegory as darkness represents sin and light, heaven)
• Stars are a symbol for God, personified (“You are the sentinals, silent and sure”) linking again to idea of darkness/light
• Entire piece is an apostrophe to Stars/God, furthering character exposition of Javert - Javert’s views on religion contrast Valjean’s
